Massachusetts offshore wind tender selects 1.6 GW of winning bids
Dec. 20 (Renewables Now) – Massachusetts to purchase 1,600 MW of power from offshore wind projects from Mayflower Wind LLC and Vineyard Wind LLC after selecting their offerings as providing “the greatest overall value” to customers .
The developers participated in a request for proposals (RfP) published in May. Their status as winners in the tender allows them to move forward in contract negotiations, the Massachusetts government said on Friday. Final contracts will be awarded after successful contract negotiations and regulatory clearance.
Mayflower Wind, a joint venture (JV) between Shell New Energies US LLC of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (AMS: RDSA) and Ocean Winds North America LLC, has secured 400 MW of capacity with a proposal that calls for more than $ 42 million (37 , EUR 3 m) in economic development initiatives in the South Coast region. In addition to installing turbines in the area south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, the project involves the construction of an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) port at Fall River. In total, the project is expected to create around 14,000 jobs. It is expected to be completed between the mid to late 2020s.
The Mayflower Wind proposal was one of three that took part in the tender, the largest being a 1,200 MW project. The company said it will begin to develop the federal lease area and continue to enter into additional energy contracts until the full lease capacity of 2,000 MW is achieved.
Meanwhile, Vineyard Wind LLC, a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), won 1,200 MW with the larger version of its Commonwealth Wind program. His other proposal was for an 800 MW variant.
Commonwealth Wind is expected to be installed in an area near the 800 MW Vineyard Wind 1 and 804 MW Park City Wind projects.
Massachusetts aims to contract 5,600 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2027, in line with its 2050 net zero commitment. The tender was its third procurement exercise to support the target.
