OPEC, ECS and OPEC Fund to Hold 3rd Annual Legal Workshop on National Climate Laws
Vienna, Austria, October 5, 2021 – The OPEC Secretariat will jointly organize with the Energy Charter Secretariat (ECS) and the OPEC Fund for International Development the third annual legal workshop on Monday, October 18 2021, by videoconference to address national climate laws and developments in case law, with a focus on reducing emissions and access to energy.
The workshop will be held as a roundtable and will aim to explore enacted national laws and proposed bills on climate issues, as well as court decisions related to climate issues.
OPEC Secretary General HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo said: “It is a great pleasure for me that the joint annual legal workshop with our partner, the Energy Charter Secretariat, and our sister organization , the OPEC Fund, has reached this stage. In its third iteration, the workshop will continue to provide an effective and dynamic platform to engage in discussions and conversations on key energy issues, including climate and emissions reduction laws.
“The legal issues surrounding the world of energy are complex and far-reaching and can introduce significant challenges. Thus, the need for a clear and effective regulatory framework has increased for the benefit of all stakeholders involved, ”added Barkindo.
Representatives of national and international oil companies, international organizations and universities will share their experiences and views during the workshop. Delegations of lawyers and officers from OPEC member countries, non-OPEC countries participating in the Declaration of Cooperation and other oil-producing countries will also be present.
The workshop is the result of the productive collaboration of OPEC, ECS and the OPEC Fund. It provides a forum for the sharing of information and experiences, as well as discussions on crucial and topical topics.
The OPEC Legal Office works, under the direction of the Secretary General, to provide information, analysis and capacity building opportunities to member countries and the international community on relevant laws and regulations needed to achieve an energy transition. and fair economy which takes into consideration complementary global objectives in terms of the environment, access to energy and sustainable development.
