The OPEC Secretariat announced that it had organized its first technical workshop with energy companies by video conference.

OPEC said its workshop is the organization’s latest outreach initiative to promote international dialogue and cooperation in support of its overarching goal of fostering lasting stability in the global oil market. OPEC noted that the event serves as a dynamic platform for national and international oil companies to discuss issues of mutual interest and exchange perspectives on energy markets.

The workshop attracted more than 100 participants, including delegates from national oil companies from OPEC member countries and non-OPEC member countries participating in the Cooperation Charter. Presentations and discussions focused on a number of key issues concerning the energy sector, including perspectives of national and international oil companies on the role of oil in energy transition, efforts to scale up projects carbon capture, the opportunities and challenges associated with the dynamics of the rapidly changing industry, as well as topics related to COP26.

“This inaugural event marks a new milestone in OPEC’s ongoing outreach efforts and builds on our long tradition of promoting partnerships with a wide range of industry players, including organizations and businesses. public and private sectors, ”OPEC Secretary General Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo said at the opening of the meeting.

“OPEC has a long historical link with the national oil companies of its member countries and, more recently, we have intensified our efforts to organize informal meetings and exchange information with international oil companies,” he said. he adds.

Referring to climate change and the next COP26 conference, Barkindo underlined the need to adopt an inclusive, fair and balanced approach to tackle the energy transition.

“Let me make it clear that OPEC supports the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost innovation and improve efficiency,” Barkindo said.

“However, this cannot be done at the cost of depleting industry investments. The fact remains: the world needs energy, energy needs investment and investment depends on business, ”he continued.

OPEC announced last week that it would hold the first technical workshop with energy companies. In an OPEC statement at the time, Barkindo said the event marked a new milestone in the organization’s outreach efforts. OPEC underlined in the statement that it has been committed to supporting the stability of the world oil market since its founding in September 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq.

COP26, or the 26th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, will be hosted by the UK in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12. The summit will bring together parties to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, according to a statement posted on the event’s website.
