Retail vet Doug Wurl steps into new leadership role
Chicago – The Bazaar Inc. has hired Doug Wurl as President to guide strategic market direction in the discount clearance, reverse logistics, and transaction space.
He will lead alongside Brad Nardick, who is the third-generation CEO of the 62-year-old family business that buys, sells and distributes millions of pieces of branded merchandise from its 400,000 square feet. warehouse, physical locations, online and discount retail stores called Bargains in a Box.
The leadership appointment comes amid widespread inventory, supply and logistics issues. The liquidation market has more than doubled in size, growing from a $309 billion industry in 2008 to more than $644 billion in 2020, according to data from Colorado State University’s College of Business Supply Chain Management. Last year, the National Retail Federation tracked a record $761 billion in merchandise that was returned to retailers.

Prior to joining The Bazaar, Wurl was president of LTD Commodities, a home and garden catalog and online business. He led initiatives that integrated merchandising, marketing, store operations and global sourcing across channels, department stores and mass, specialty and e-commerce platforms.
He was President and CEO of DRS Product Returns, Golf Galaxy, LLC and Senior Vice President of Dick’s Sporting Goods. Wurl was also head of merchandising and overseeing global sourcing at Big Lots, having held similar positions at Sears Holding and Shopko. He began his career in consumer goods in the early 1980s at Macy’s at Rich’s Department Store and Federated Department Stores, where he led purchasing and product development for nearly 20 years.
